Congratulations to Dennis Lemke and Katherine Forbes – Capital Weather Gang readers who made the most accurate forecasts for this past winter’s snowfall total of 3.1 inches at Reagan National Airport.
Dennis predicted 3 inches and Katherine 3.2 inches – both within one-tenth of an inch of nailing the actual amount. Kudos to the other readers who ranked among the top 10 best forecasts, shown to the right. 413 readers entered forecasts, so finishing in the top 10 is quite a feat.
Overall, CWG readers had a tough time predicting this year’s snowfall amounts. The average total forecast was 17.7 inches (on the wrong side of the 30-year average of 15.4 inches) compared to the actual of 3.1 inches.
CWG’s official winter outlook called for slightly to somewhat below normal snowfall – or 10-12 inches. That prediction was in correct direction relative to average, but well off the mark. Our official review of our winter outlook will come out in the next week.
