Today’s Daily Digit

A somewhat subjective rating of the days weather, on a scale of 1 to 10.

It’s muggy’licious with that persistent afternoon storm threat, some of which could be severe. Iceland, anyone?

We need to watch for a severe weather chance today so check in again this afternoon. Yet, it’s with these decent levels of clouds and rain chances in the forecast that we can avoid hitting hotter temperatures. Let’s keep in mind it could be hotter but, yes, it looks like we continue our muggy, hazy, wet pattern. Outdoor plans can be executed carefully—especially on Saturday. Look on the bright side? Only once heading into the workweek do rain chances head appreciably higher.

Today (Friday): Decent amounts of sunshine through at least early afternoon could be a problem today. Why? It could instigate the percolation of mid-to-late afternoon thunderstorms—not to mention add to the discomfort. Expect fairly hot temperatures in the mid-80s to around 90. Lower 90s perhaps south of town in sunniest of spots, if storms are slow to move in. Organized storm chances, though, are highest south of the city and escalate (toward 55-65% chance) as the day progresses.

A few spots could see some severe conditions. It appears the further north you are from D.C. the less primed the air mass will be compared to places south, but that’s subject to change in this dynamic environment. Even outside of storms, winds could blow decently out of the west-southwest at 10-20 mph. Confidence: Medium

Tonight: Showers and storms should slowly die down (45-55% chance of evening rain). But clouds are even slower to dissipate. Low temperatures slowly drop to the low 70s downtown, perhaps upper 60s outside the Beltway. Westerly breezes may persist in the 5-10 mph range. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Saturday): We may have more in the way of sunshine, but also more in the way of humidity as well. Upper 80s to low 90s show themselves to be stifling enough, at least until any showers or thunderstorms. Yet it could be the “lowest” (only 50%) chance of the weekend with best odds later in the afternoon and into the evening. Breezes may be sporadic out of the southwest at 5-10 mph. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow night: There’s a continued decent 50/50 threat of storms and showers through evening, as skies stay mostly cloudy. But the clouds and rain should diminish as the night wears on. Low temperatures in the upper 60s to lower 70s appear reasonable to expect. Confidence: Medium

Sunday: Higher chances (60%) of showers and storms return. Likely invading our area from the south — fingers crossed not sooner — later in the day. So half of the day could be salvaged for outdoor activities? We hopefully trade increased mugginess for a slight reprieve in temperatures with mid-to-upper 80s probable. Confidence: Medium

Sunday night: Looks like a pronounced (60-70%) rain chance with low temperatures in the upper 60s to low 70s. Hope you can sleep through a few rumbles, prior to your workweek? Confidence: Medium-High

Monday looks muggy and murky. By that I mean cloudy and wet at times, with periodic showers and storms. Definitely take that umbrella with you to work, with high 70-80% rain chances. Less-high high temperatures in the low-to-mid 80s may help lessen that steamy feeling. Hopefully. Confidence: Medium

Tuesday clouds and shower/storm chances continue. Both categories should be of the off-and-on nature, though rain remains likely at least at times during the day. High temperatures in the 80s are likely, but if we see more sun, we could have a few spots south of town sneak in a 90 degree reading. Confidence: Low-Medium
