A cold front now moving off to our south and east has already brought with it some sweet relief. And there’s more of that to come, especially on the overnight temperature and overall humidity side. Highs today were mainly in the mid-80s. If that’s not cool enough, tomorrow might be at least a touch cooler in many spots. More like the beginning of September than late July, as far as averages go.

Through Tonight: A north wind continues to bring in drier air through the night, and clouds stay less numerous through evening as the front drifts further away. Dew points eventually falling into the 50s most spots means lows are cooler than we’ve seen in quite a while — near 60 to the mid-60s! Clouds may increase again by sunrise as a little coastal system gets going to our southeast.

Tomorrow (Thursday): The coastal storm moves from near the Carolinas and off to the northeast during the day. It might send back at least partly cloudy conditions this far west, perhaps even cloudier for places east of 95 at times. Rain odds are not huge, but a few showers might drift by (20% chance). A northerly wind around 5 to 10 mph helps keep us from warming up a lot, as highs mainly reach the near 80 to low 80s range. Humidity remains low.

Partly cloudy or partly sunny? Tim Torkildson sent us the neat little poem below, discussing the difference between partly sunny and partly cloudy…

Partly sunny/partly cloudy – just what is the diff?
Should I buy good suntan oil or hire out a skiff?
Speak, O weather prophets, in concise words – not oblique.
Do not rain confusion with your cold fronts that are weak!

Clarity’s a virtue that I find in short supply
When I’m dealing with a weather girl or weather guy.
Pulling punches, obfuscating – a zig and then a zag;
This is what I get when paging through my local rag!

Of course, I should not gibber about inconsistency
In the nation’s capital, where Congress frequently
Talks through hats with cloven tongues – is that so very new?
Compared to them you’re crystal clear – I apologize to you!
