We close the unofficial last weekend of summer (Labor Day) with a mini-heat wave (likely third straight day at 90 or higher) and the possibility of a thunderstorm or two.  Clouds and a bit of heat linger Tuesday, but a dry pattern with relatively low humidity establishes itself Wednesday through the weekend.

Today (Monday): A muggy morning and hot afternoon draw hordes to the pools and beaches.  But by late afternoon, there’s a 30-40 percent chance of storms (highest chances north and west of the District).  Highs range from the upper 80s to low 90s, with high humidity levels. Winds are light, from the west around 5-10 mph. Confidence: Medium

storm threat

Tonight: Evening storm chances are in the 40-50 percent range (highest north and northeast of the District), so keep an eye on radar if you’re at/hosting a barbeque.  A few storms could put down some very heavy rain and gusty winds. For the remainder of the night, it’s partly to mostly cloudy with a 20-30 percent of lingering showers/storms. Lows range from the mid-to-upper 60s to low 70s (downtown). Winds are light from the west. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow (Tuesday): A cold front slowly clears the south and eastern portion of the region, keeping a 20-40 percent chance of showers and storms, with the best chances east and southeast of the District.  Under partly sunny skies, highs are still quite warm, in the mid-to-upper 80s. Winds are from the northwest at 5-10 mph, and humidity slowly drops off from high to medium during the course of the day. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow night: Cooler, drier air finally starts to assert itself.  Under clear to partly cloudy skies, lows drop from the upper 50s in the cooler suburbs to the low-to-mid 60s downtown. Confidence: Medium-High

The stretch from Wednesday to Friday is beautiful, with mostly sunny skies, and relatively low humidity.  Highs each day are in the upper 70s to low 80s, with overnight lows in the 50s to near 60 (downtown). Confidence: Medium

The weekend also looks very nice from this vantage point.  We’ll have to watch a possible cold front to our north trying to push down by Sunday.  But it may get hung up leaving us high, dry, and warm.  Highs each day reach into the mid-80s with overnight lows in the mid-50s in the cooler suburbs to the upper 60s downtown. Confidence: Medium
