After one of the coldest mornings of the season thus far, one that even included a bit of frost here and there, a stellar afternoon unfolded. Highs in the mid-and-upper 60s are right around where we should be this time of year. There’s more of that tomorrow, along with a lot of cloudiness and increasing odds of rain.

Through Tonight: Besides a few wispy high clouds we should stay mostly clear through the first half of the night or so, with clouds increasing by or before sunrise. It’s not as cold as last night, but we might see the biggest drops in temps early. Lows dip as far as the low 40s in the typically coldest spots, while nearing 50 or the low 50s downtown. Winds are light.

Tomorrow (Tuesday): One way or another, we should see quite a bit of cloudiness. Much of the day could end up dry, but rain chances are on their way up in the afternoon and beyond (30% by 2 p.m. or so). It does appear there is an increasingly likely chance of a more significant period of showers as early as evening and into the overnight as well, all associated with the advancing cold front. Daytime Highs range from about 63-68. Winds are southwest at 5-10 mph during the day.

Fires are seen all around Sydney, across southeast Australia, on October 21, 2013. (NASA Earth Observatory)

‘Mega-fire’ risk? Fires that have created dramatic smokey scenes in Sydney, Australia continue to burn in massive fashion to the northwest and north of the city. At this point, fires burning largely in rural regions have burned more than 200 homes and scorched at least 150,000 acres, with little sign of slowing. There is even growing fear that the largest batch of fires to the northwest of the city may merge into a ‘mega-fire,’ and ultimately threaten the western suburbs of Sydney.

Pollen update: Mold spores are low/moderate, while all other pollen types are low.
