Cold air lags behind the sharp front that passed overnight, so the week opens on the mild side with afternoon temperatures flirting with 70. But by Tuesday, chillier air asserts itself and sticks around for a couple days.  Temperatures rebound modestly to close the work week before a major blast of cold air crashes into the region by Sunday.

Today (Monday): After 60+ hours in hiding, the sun shows its bright, shiny face today. (Some lingering clouds are possible early in the morning, mainly east of I-95. ) The sunshine coupled with a downsloping (warming) wind from the west elevate afternoon highs all the way into the upper 60s to low 70s.  It may not feel quite that mild, with winds from the west at 10-20 mph gusting to 30! Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: Winds settle down a little, but not entirely. The lingering breeziness (10-15 mph, from the northwest) and the infiltration of cooler air make it feel a bit wintry.  Lows range from the mid-to-upper 30s (suburbs-city), with wind chills near freezing. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Tuesday): This is likely the coldest day of the work week, with highs struggling to reach 50 despite lots of sunshine. It’s quite breezy too, with winds out of the northwest at 10-15 mph, gusting over 20 mph at times.  Confidence: High

Tomorrow night: Mostly clear and cold with diminishing winds. Lows range from the mid-20s in the cooler suburbs to the low-to-mid 30s downtown. Confidence: Medium-High

High pressure holds firm Wednesday and Thursday, with partly to mostly sunny skies. Highs Wednesday are near 55, moderating to 55-60 Thursday.  Wednesday night’s lows range from the upper 20s to mid-30s (downtown).  Confidence: Medium-High

Highs may climb back up to near 60 Friday, but there’s a slight (25 percent) chance of late day showers as a cold front approaches.  These shower chances persist Friday night, with lows in the 40s. Confidence: Low-Medium

The cold front pushes south of the region by Saturday.  There’s a small chance low pressure tries to form along it, producing a chilly rain Saturday into Saturday evening (30-40 percent chance).  More likely, it’s just variably cloudy and cooler, with highs 45-50.  Skies should start to slowly clear out Saturday night, with lows in the 20s to near 30. Confidence: Low-Medium

Sunday may be the coolest day of the fall so far, with partly sunny skies and highs only near 40. Confidence: Medium
