Today’s Daily Digit

A somewhat subjective rating of the day’s weather, on a scale of 1 to 10.

Any extra clouds shouldn’t keep us from ending the week on a pleasant note. Maybe warmer than Thursday?

Store those heavy coats, bottles of lotion, scarves and gloves. At least until next week once a cold front fully passes through with its cold air infiltrating heavily by Tuesday. Time to open the windows between now and then? Do all those outdoor plans squandered by recent wintry weather? Whatever you’ve got planned… Get to it! Enjoy. Just don’t be alarmed if and when your winterized body starts sweating.

Today (Friday): High pressure nearby should indeed help pump in warmth on southwesterly breezes around 10 mph. How “dirty,” with periodic cloud cover, could our high pressure prove? It remains to be seen. Without many clouds, temperatures should easily bolt above 60, to perhaps mid-60s. Should we see a great number of clouds, we may only eke out mid-50s to near 60. Might want to lean on the warm side given yesterday, but hard to fully bite this time of year. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: Our southwest wind flow stays steady around 5-10 mph, helping to keep us very mild with lows in the mid-to-upper 40s. There is an off chance (10-20%) that a few of you see a sprinkle or shower. Nothing major. But skies do remain partly-to-mostly cloudy even if you see no rain drops. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Saturday): Skies may remain fairly gray with mainly mid-and-high level cloud cover. Despite these clouds, we still should get into the mid-60s with a few upper 60s possible, especially south of town. All of this is in response to a slowly incoming storm system well to our west. It’s driving southerly flow out in front of its path, but also throwing those clouds into the mix and even the slightest of chances for a sprinkle. Southerly breezes continue around 10 mph. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: This one looks very cloudy. Expect muggy (yeah, weird for December) overnight low temperatures around 60 downtown (records could be challenged) — 50s north and west of the Beltway. If you do see a break in the clouds, teammate David Streit recommends watching the rising moon and the bright blue star Regulus rising with it, off in the eastern sky. Confidence: Medium

Sunday: Rain chances increase along with temperatures. Records could be broken for many of us, as we reach toward the 70-degree mmark, with mid-70s possible south of town. Showers and even a rumble later in the afternoon could be embedded in the generally cloudy skies. We have a 50-60% chance for this rain to dump a quarter of an inch on some of us—more if a heavier thundershower rolls by. Should showers be numerous and arrive early, we could have to reduce our temperature expectations. Confidence: Medium

Sunday night: Cloudy with showers likely (70-80% chance), perhaps even a thundershower. Low temperatures eventually in the low 50s downtown seem likely, with a few upper 40s possible well outside the Beltway. Confidence: Medium

Monday’s skies could remain mostly cloudy still despite northwesterly breezes attempting to cool and clear us out. As temperatures cool off a bit more toward averages we should see this time of year, prepare an extra layer of clothing for upper 40s to mid-50s. Sunnier spots south and east of town should end up warmest. But, in general, temperatures could decline as the day wears on. Showers still have a 25%-35% chance of threatening as well. Perhaps keep that small umbrella on you. Confidence: Low-Medium

Tuesday has a much colder morning commute which should find you wearing your heavy coat and reaching for the scarf. Don’t put those items too deep into storage the next few days! Even afternoon temperatures may struggle through the mid-to-upper 30s, but at least we have sunshine back. Small consolation? Confidence: Low-Medium
