Records have been maintained in Baltimore for 141 years. This morning’s bone-chilling low of 4, as recorded at BWI airport, broke the record for the coldest March temperature ever recorded. It bested the previous record low of 5, set on this same date in 1873.
The region’s other major airport, Reagan National, only dropped to 14, 10 degrees above the record for the date and month, set in 1873.
On its Facebook page, the National Weather Service forecast office in Sterling cautions the Dulles and Baltimore records are preliminary, and not yet official:
UNOFFICIAL and preliminary review of observations from last night show that we may have set an all time March low temperature record of 4 degrees at BWI airport (previous record low was 5 degrees on 3/4/1873) and tied a March record at Dulles Airport of -1 degrees (also reached on 3/15/1993). Reagan National Airport got down to 14 degrees, 10 degrees warmer than the previous March 4th record of 4 degrees from 1873. ***This data must still undergo quality control before it becomes official!***
