Winter Weather Advisory far southeast Maryland and into Virginia until midday.

Today’s Daily Digit

A somewhat subjective rating of the day’s weather, on a scale of 1 to 10.

Dreary day is much colder than normal for late March.

Express Forecast

Today: Cloudy. Highs: 37-42.

Tonight: Mostly cloudy. Lows: 30-35.

Tomorrow: Mostly cloudy, showers. Highs: 45-49.

Our brand new snow pack doesn’t melt too quickly today thanks to temperatures mainly in the 30s and cloudy skies preventing the power of the March sun from doing its normal work.  We warm up a bit better tomorrow into the 40s, and rain showers take their shot at chiseling away at the snow. But warmer temperatures Thursday and Friday and increasing sunshine probably go a long way towards finishing the job.

The melt-off for the balance of the week keeps it muddy and mucky. But the return to normal to above normal temperatures late this week should carry into Saturday before another big cold front drops us back to colder-than-normal weather by Sunday, setting up for another unseasonably cold final week of March.

Today (Tuesday):  Watch out for slick spots this morning as most areas should start the day below freezing.  A secondary low off the Carolina coastline today prevents sunshine from returning for now.  Clouds fill the skies for most of the day, but you may see a better chance at breaks at times toward the far northern and western suburbs.  Temperatures only lift to the upper 30s to maybe low 40s with light winds from the northeast at 5 to 10 mph.  Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: Partly to mostly cloudy skies prevent temperatures from falling too sharply with expectations for lows toward dawn only in the lower to middle 30s with light winds.  Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Wednesday):  Clouds continue with scattered drizzle and rain showers ahead of a weak cool front.  Highs do better into the middle to upper 40s, which combined with the rain showers should work down that snow pack some.  Light winds from the east shift to coming from the south by later in the day.  Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow night: Partly cloudy with evening rain showers possible.  Lows fall into the middle to upper 30s, but it may hold to just near 40F in the city.  Confidence: Medium

Snow Potential Index

A daily assessment of the potential for at least ~1″ of snow in the next week, on a 0-10 scale. More info

0 – Very little chance for accumulating snow through early next week. But have to watch period just beyond.

Thursday and Friday find their way back to more typical March weather conditions with mostly sunny skies as highs lift to the middle to upper 50s on Thursday and potentially touch 60F on Friday as we say hello to calendar spring.  Mostly clear Thursday night with lows in the low 30s in the outer suburbs and middle to upper 30s in the city.  Confidence: Medium-High

The weekend has a warmer start as highs lift into the 60s under partly cloudy skies.  Showers invade by either afternoon or evening ahead of a new cold front.  This particular cold front is forecast to have more potency.  Temperatures fall into the 30s along with partly cloudy skies Saturday night (some upper 20s far north and west suburbs) with breezy conditions enhancing the wind chill.  Sunday looks to be back to below normal temperatures again as highs only struggle up into the 40s with partly sunny skies.  This is a slow spring this year.  Confidence: Medium
