The coming week’s weather has a lot going for it, just not today. Rain, heavy at times, is likely along with coolish temperatures. Some improvement Tuesday and Wednesday before a gem of a day on Thursday. Friday isn’t bad either but an inbound front could bring some late day and/or overnight showers. Next weekend has top notch potential but too soon to lock it in.

Today (Monday): Rain develops this morning between the morning rush and mid-morning southwest to northeast. By midday and into the afternoon, the rain may become heavy at times with day time totals of 0.5-1.0″ possible (locally heavier possible). Cool air is wedged into the region, with highs mostly in the mid-50s. Winds from the east at around 10 mph. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: Showers are likely at times in the evening and we could even see a thundershower before the front punches through late at night. Temperatures hold more or less steady, with lows ranging from the mid-40s to near 50 (downtown). Another 0.25-0.5″ of rain is possible before tapering off from midnight to 2 a.m. Look out for some possible fog late at night. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Tuesday): Skies have mostly cleared by the time you get up and head out. More clouds pop up as the afternoon wears on and a brief sprinkle/shower (20 percent chance) isn’t out of the question. It’s breezy (winds from the west at 10-15 mph, gusting to 20-25 mph at times) with seasonably mild high temperatures from 60-65. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: Partly cloudy and cool, with lows from the mid-to-upper 30s in the cooler suburbs to the low-to-mid 40s downtown. Confidence: Medium-High

Wednesday’s not a bad day, but – setting aside Monday – the coolest of the week. Skies tend to be variably cloudy – with episodes of both partial sunshine and considerable cloud cover. An isolated showers is possible (20 percent chance), with highs 55-60. Mostly clear and brisk overnight with lows in the low-to-mid 30s in the cooler suburbs to near 40 downtown. Confidence: Medium

Thursday looks fantastic with moderating temperatures and lots of sunshine. Highs climb well into the 60s to near 70. Mostly clear at night, with lows from the upper 30s in our colder suburbs to the mid-40s downtown. Confidence: Medium-High

The balance of Friday should be very mild and rain-free- but we need to watch the timing of a front coming into the region that could set off showers late in the day or overnight. Highs should climb well into the 60s. A 40 percent chance of showers overnight, with lows in the 40s. Confidence: Medium

I’m really liking the setup for the weekend. Friday’s front should push off south inviting high pressure, sunshine and mild temperatures into the region (but if the front doesn’t get a good enough push that would introduce the possibility of a more unsettled Saturday, at least). Highs Saturday probably climb into the mid-60s and perhaps up to near 70 Sunday. Overnights low are in the 40s. Confidence: Low-Medium
