D.C. area forecast: Mostly nice for holiday weekend with gradual warming

Today’s Daily Digit

A somewhat subjective rating of the day’s weather, on a scale of 0 to 10.

Brilliant spring weather for much of the day, but we’ll watch for a sneaky shower late afternoon or evening.

Express Forecast

Today: Nice temps, mostly to partly sunny. Late-day shower? Highs: Mid-to-upper 70s!

Tonight: Partly cloudy, evening shower? Lows: Mid-50s to low 60s.

Tomorrow: Mostly sunny, warm. Highs: Low-to-mid 80s.

We start the holiday weekend squeezed between low pressure over the Atlantic moving away, and high pressure inching closer from the Great Lakes. The result is a mostly to partly sunny, mild and breezy Saturday, then a mostly sunny Sunday and Memorial Day as high pressure dominates into early next week. We’ll see gradually warmer temperatures each day until shower and thunderstorm chances increase on Tuesday.

nice day

Today (Saturday): When was the last time all three days of the Memorial Day weekend were nice? It’s not unusual for thunderstorms or lingering spring-time cold to crash outdoor festivities on this holiday weekend. Not this year, though, as Saturday gets things started on a mostly to partly sunny and mostly dry note with excellent highs in the mid-to-upper 70s. It is a bit breezy, with winds from the northwest around 10-15 mph at times, and a couple showers could pop late in the afternoon or evening (30% chance) especially in the northern and eastern suburbs. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: We’ll hang on to that 30% chance of a couple showers through the evening. Otherwise, if we can avoid the rain then it’s a partly cloudy and perfectly pleasant evening for a first round of cook-outs! Winds become light as temperatures drop to near 70 by mid-evening, and to overnight lows mainly in the mid-to-upper 50s, maybe near 60 to the low 60s downtown and near the Chesapeake Bay. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Sunday): High pressure is squarely overhead tomorrow allowing for mostly sunny skies and highs climbing to the low-to-mid 80s. A pretty good day for the pool by afternoon, but pack the sunglasses and sunscreen. Light winds out of the northwest, near 5-10 mph, keep the air nice and dry. Confidence: High

Tomorrow night: Similar to tonight with lows again ranging from the mid-50s to the low 60s, the warmer spots being downtown and closest to the water. Winds should be light or even calm, which means that if you’re out during the evening, you’ll need the bug spray to keep those mosquitoes away! Confidence: High

Memorial Day Monday looks like a good one for just about anything, even if quite warm by afternoon. High pressure anchored overhead should keep skies mostly sunny, and a warm breeze from the southwest should help push highs to at least the mid-80s, with upper 80s to near 90 not out of reach. A great day to hit the beach, go to the pool, or have that block party BBQ. Monday night is more on the mild side too, with lows in the upper 50s to mid-60s. Enjoy! Confidence: Medium-High

The summery feel continues on Tuesday with highs in the 80s to near 90 and perhaps more noticeable humidity. An approaching cold front also means the potential for increasing clouds and, right now, a 30-40% chance of showers and thunderstorms. Confidence: Low-Medium
