3:20 p.m. update: It’s beautiful though breezy out there (winds gusting from 20-30 mph), with temperatures in the low 80s. The best part is the low humidity (dew points near 50!). For the fireworks this evening, winds diminish a little (probably blowing at 10-20 mph), with very pleasant temperatures in the 70s. Enjoy!

Today’s Daily Digit

A somewhat subjective rating of the day’s weather, on a scale of 1 to 10.

Hard to grade. Afternoon and fireworks time should more than make up for any clouds or a shower early.

Let’s get Arthur out of the region today, so that we can enjoy a grand 4th of July evening with fireworks tonight. We dry out and stay that way through the weekend. Very few clouds, showers, or humid readings to worry about for a few days. It may be one of our most comfortable July 4ths in years. Next week we have July coming back full-fledged for a few days, so do enjoy our break while it lasts.

Independence Day (Friday): Arthur, while far away, still indirectly impacts us today. This morning with enhanced shower chances through possibly a few hours after sunrise, but this activity should slide east quickly and not be too problematic. After that, we feel Arthur’s breezes for the rest of the day. Winds will be out of a northerly direction on our side of the far-off storm, around 15-25 mph with some higher gusts. We’ll dry out quickly at least. These winds bring in lower humidity as well! As skies clear during the midday and afternoon, temperatures “struggle” to max out in the near 80 to mid-80s range. Confidence: Medium

Tonight: Arthur having taken with it Mother Nature’s fireworks, we’ll just have to settle for a breezy but otherwise awesome manmade fireworks evening! Breezes from the northwest should diminish into the 10-15 mph range. Festivities on the National Mall should be very sweet. Skies are mainly clear and evening readings are very comfortable in the 70s, dropping by just prior to dawn into the mid-50s (burbs) to low 60s (downtown). A windows open night? Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Saturday): Sunny with enjoyable low humidity. As long as we slather on that sunscreen, we can’t complain much about temperatures in the low-to-mid 80s! Enjoy those bright blue skies, time at the pool, or playing at the beach. A refreshing 5-10 mph northwesterly breeze is what convinced me to award a Nice Day stamp of approval! Confidence: High

Tomorrow night: Fairly clear skies allow stars to shine and for us to see the half moon next to Mars. Temperatures in the 70s during the evening head down into the upper 50s to mid-60s. Dew points remain comfortably below 60 degrees, so maybe one more night of windows open? Confidence: High

Sunday: We’ve got humidity creeping upward but honestly we can still salvage it. High temperatures stay (hopefully) in the mid-80s to near 90. As long as they don’t hit 90! We should be able to enjoy abundant sunshine and a slightly pleasant breeze for those driving back from the beach with their windows down. Confidence: High

Sunday night: Skies should stay partly cloudy to mostly clear. Another decent evening, even though we might need a bit of air conditioning overnight. Our low temperatures before dawn only make it down into the upper 60s to lower 70s. Confidence: High

By Monday, we pay some penance for our amazing three days in…what month is it? Oh yeah. July. Swampiness returns under mostly sunny skies with high temperatures in the low-to-mid 90s. Can you work poolside one more day? Humidity is definitely back, in case you didn’t get my swamp reference. If you are one of the lucky 15-20% of folks who see a cooling thundershower before sunset, I will envy you. Confidence: Medium

Tuesday’s heat, if we are lucky, may “only” get into the low 90s. Thanks go to more clouds, showers and a higher (30-40%) chance of thunderstorms, especially during afternoon hours. It could be nice and hazy with all this muggy air–and perhaps lower air quality. So take it easy. Drink plenty of water! Confidence: Low-Medium

Beachcast gets a better grade by Saturday, thanks to Arthur’s mess on Friday. Arthur may get just close enough to spread showers into the MD/DE/NJ beaches today.  The better likelihood of rain, which could be heavy for a time, is down in Southeast VA. Winds range from 15-30 mph in the northern beach areas (MD/DE/NJ) but could be 25-45 mph in the south (VA).

Breezes this weekend do eventually settle and beach conditions become more uniformly superb in our wider region. Saturday and Sunday should see subsiding surf, sunnier skies and highs in the mid-to-upper 80s. Perhaps a bit muggy at times by Sunday, when breezes may calm periodically. In the off-chance you think the Outer Banks is a good idea in NC, please do consider staying away while clean up gets underway.
