We’ve been treated to some might fine weather lately. Even yesterday, albeit more humid, wasn’t all that bad. But even in the nicest of D.C. summers, it’s just a matter of time until you run into a classic summer day like today. In the wake of today’s surging heat and humidity, storms threaten late today into tomorrow, before a fantastic Friday and mixed outlook for our weekend.

Today (Wednesday): Kind of your classic summer day in D.C., which we haven’t had an overabundance of this summer so far. Partly sunny skies combine with a warm breeze from the southwest (near 5-10 mph) to heat things up toward afternoon highs in the low-to-mid 90s. Add in the moderate to high humidity (dew points in the upper 60s to near 70) and we’ve got ourselves an afternoon heat index peaking in the mid-to-upper 90s. Scattered thunderstorms become a threat (50% chance) mainly after 4-5 p.m., and a few could turn severe with heavy rain and damaging winds. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: We’ll continue to see a decent chance (50%) of scattered thunderstorms during the evening, a few potentially severe with heavy rain and damaging winds, before the coverage and intensity of any storms likely diminishes after midnight or so. It’s plenty muggy through the night as lows level out in the low-to-mid 70s. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Thursday): A cold front coming through looks like it will keep shower and storm chances going at around 50%, with occasional activity possible both during the morning and afternoon. The severe potential should be diminished, but we could still see a few heavy rainers. Humidity retreats to the moderate range thanks to 5-10 mph winds from the northwest, which also cool us down to highs in the low-to-mid 80s under mostly cloudy skies. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow night: We’ve got a pretty nice night on tap as clearing skies take hold during the evening into the overnight, and the humidity drops a bit more. With a continued cooler breeze from the northwest, most everyone should fall back into the 60s for overnight lows. Confidence: Medium-High

Friday is going to be a tempting one to take a long lunch break, or skip out of work altogether. Mostly sunny skies and low humidity team up for a fantastic close to the work week as highs hit the mid-80s. Friday evening should be a great one to be out and about, with temperatures falling back into the 70s on their way to overnight lows in the 60s. Confidence: Medium-High

The weekend starts warm and probably more humid again, though nothing terrible, with plenty of sun and Saturday highs heading for the mid-80s to near 90. Sunday shapes up a bit warmer with highs near 90 to the low 90s, as humidity climbs to the moderate to high range. Storm chances enter the picture as well. Let’s call it a 30% chance for now, but those odds are subject to change in either direction. Confidence: Low-Medium
