Between 4 and 7 p.m. Wednesday, a line of showers and storms dashed through the Washington, D.C. metro area. Some produced impressive downpours, but the skies that followed in their wake were extraordinary.

What follows is a compilation of mesmerizing mammatus, awesome anvil clouds, radical rainbows, and stunning sunsets.  Skilled cloud scouters will also see cumulus, stratus and cirrus in the mix. Some sky views from Nationals Park were particularly magnificent. Here’s one of the best cloud photograph collections we’ve posted in quite some time…
