Today was about perfect. Other than the Monday part. Highs rose into the upper 70s and low 80s across the area under blissfully blue skies. With humidity on haitus, it really felt a little fall-like at times. A stellar evening and overnight is ahead, and a warmer but still pleasant Tuesday is on tap as well.

Through Tonight: Clear skies and calming winds lead to “plummeting” temperatures. Fortunately, they plummet to very pleasant readings. We should stay in the 70s through 8 or 9 p.m., and longer downtown, heading to lows in the mid-50s in the suburbs to mid-60s downtown. There could be a touch of late night fog in a few places, mainly near rivers or in valleys.

Tomorrow (Tuesday): High pressure continues to dominate the region, which means little in the way of cloud cover and plenty in the way of warm temperatures. Afternoon temperatures are in the mid-and-upper 80s most spots. Humidity is still rather comfortable, but a light southwest wind makes it a bit noticeably by late in the day.

Pollen update: Weed pollen is currently moderate/high. According to Susan Kosisky of the U.S. Army Centralized Allergen Extract Lab, we’re closing in on the worst period for weed pollen, with the predominant type being ragweed. “The ‘peak week’ for ragweed in our area is generally the 1st week in September,” Kosisky said in an e-mail today.

Others have commented that this may be the worst ragweed season ever for parts of the country, thanks to cool and wet conditions persisting through the summer.

When it comes to other types of pollen locally, grass is moderate, and tree pollen/mold spores are low/moderate.
