The Weather Channel’s biggest stars – Sam Champion, Jim Cantore, and Stephanie Abrams – deliver the distant news as part of an outreach effort by the World Meteorological Organization to bring the plausible impacts of climate change into the present.
“Climate change can seem like a distant problem, with little relevancy to our daily lives. But an unconventional public awareness campaign aims to change that,” writes Mashable’s Andrew Freedman.
The Weather Channel joins a dozen other media outlets from around the world that are producing these 2050 weather segments.
Videos from Brazil, Japan, Denmark, Zambia, and Burkina Faso have already been released. The WMO will post videos from several other countries over the next two weeks leading up to the United Nations Climate Summit, which begins September 23 in New York City.
“WMO is launching the videos during the month of September to support UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon’s call for government, finance, business, and civil society leaders to agree to ambitious action on climate change at the UN Climate Summit on 23September to prevent the worst-case scenarios,” the WMO press release on the campaign says.
