A hiker on Mount Ontake captured the eruption of the volcano, which ends up overtaking his group, covering them in ash. One person has been reported dead, and seven people are missing after Mount Ontake erupted in the Nagano Prefecture of Japan on Saturday.

Rescue crews couldn’t reach the injured by helicopter on Saturday due to the dangerous ash in the air. They are going to attempt a rescue again on Sunday. For now, the stranded are taking shelter in mountain lodges. The area is a popular hiking destination.

In the video, hikers seem amazed by the explosion of ash from the mountain top, though quickly realize it’s headed down the slope toward them. They begin to descend the mountain, but the effort is fruitless. A gust of wind precedes the ash cloud, and then the sky goes dark.

The video ends with the hikers coughing.

Dozens of people are stranded near peak of erupting volcano west of Tokyo in Japan. Officials said airplanes have been diverted to avoid the ash clouds. (Reuters)
