D.C. area forecast: Wonderful Wednesday, then turning unsettled through weekend

TODAY’S DAILY DIGIT
A somewhat subjective rating of the day’s weather, on a scale of 0 to 10.

9/10: Sunny 80s with low humidity feels pretty fantastic on its own, let alone after the stifling heat.

EXPRESS FORECAST

Today: Mostly sunny, low humidity. Highs: Mid-to-upper 80s.
Tonight: Comfortable. Lows: 60s to near 70.
Tomorrow: Increasing chance of PM storms. Highs: Near 90.

FORECAST IN DETAIL

From the heat is on, to the heat is gone. Last evening’s stormy cold front swept away the heat and the humidity (good riddance!), leaving us with a pleasantly warm day today and a comfortable night tonight. Shower and storm chances return tomorrow afternoon and especially tomorrow night, and it looks like they’ll stick around through a much cooler weekend.

Today (Wednesday): It’s still warm out there but a true gem compared to yesterday. Mostly sunny skies and much lower humidity team up for a really nice day, with highs in the mid-to-upper 80s. A light breeze from the northwest at 5-10 mph only enhances our refreshing change of pace. Confidence: High

Tonight: Evening temperatures cooling toward and into the 70s are quite comfortable, especially as the mugginess factor remains mostly a non-factor. Overnight lows settle nicely into the 60s most spots, maybe holding up near 70 downtown under mostly to partly clear skies. Confidence: High

Tomorrow (Thursday): We start to trend a bit more humid, and with that we’ll likely see increasing clouds as unsettled weather approaches from the west. The heat creeps higher as well with highs aiming for around 90. Could see a few showers or thunderstorms pop in the afternoon (30% chance). Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow night: Shower and storm chances increase to 60% during the evening and overnight. We may see an area of strong to severe storms develop somewhere in the mid-Atlantic, so we’ll have to keep an eye on that. Plus the muggies are back with lows in the sweaty upper 60s to mid-70s. Confidence: Low-Medium

A LOOK AHEAD

A stalled front, and low pressure developing along it, means a persistent threat of scattered showers and thunderstorms Friday through Sunday. We’ll try to get a handle on the most likely windows for showers and storms as we get closer. Plenty of clouds hold highs to the 80s on Friday, and then a good bit cooler Saturday and Sunday with highs probably in the 70s. Confidence: Low
