FORECAST IN DETAIL

Fall officially arrived this morning at 4:22 a.m. EDT, and what an awesome autumn day it is, with plenty of sun and comfortable air. We’ll do it again tomorrow before clouds increase on Friday. Will rain be close behind for the weekend? On that question, the models are sending a mixed message.

Today (Wednesday): It’s a picture-perfect day for the Pope’s visit here in Washington. Partly to mostly sunny skies shine down and a light breeze blows from the north-northeast around 10 mph. Meanwhile, highs couldn’t be more comfortable, in the upper 70s to near 80 with low humidity. Confidence: High

Tonight: Skies are partly cloudy, and with light winds evening temperatures should drop nicely through the 70s and into the 60s. Overnight lows range from the mid-to-upper 50s outside the Beltway, to near 60 to the low 60s closer to town. Confidence: High

Tomorrow (Thursday): The good times roll with partly to mostly sunny skies and highs reaching the upper 70s to low 80s. Clouds may increase late in the day as winds shift to more of an onshore flow from the east. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: Mugginess makes a bit of a comeback thanks to the onshore flow. Partly to mostly cloudy skies could also produce a shower or two, though it’s just a 20% chance as of now. Lows are on the warm side for late September, in the 60s area-wide. Confidence: Medium-High

A LOOK AHEAD

Friday trends partly to mostly cloudy as low pressure off the Southeast coast begins to drift north. Around a 30% chance that a few afternoon showers work their way into the area from the south, as the clouds hold highs to the low-to-mid 70s. That 30% chance of showers continues Friday night with lows settling in the upper 50s to low 60s. Confidence: Medium

The weekend features a good ol’ fashioned duel between high pressure centered over New England and low pressure along the Carolina coast. Models are having a tough time deciding which will win out, which means our forecast scenarios range from overcast and rainy with highs in the 60s, to partly to mostly cloudy with just a chance of isolated or scattered showers and highs in the 70s. Hope to have a better handle on the situation by tomorrow. Confidence: Low
