A somewhat subjective rating of the day’s weather, on a scale of 0 to 10.

8/10: Some showers possible late today, but a third straight day near 70 in December? Pinch me!

Today: Increasing clouds, very mild. Showers late. Highs: 65-72.
Tonight: Scattered evening showers, partial clearing late. Lows: Upper 40s to low 50s.
Tomorrow: Partly sunny, breezy. Highs: 62-67.

Temperatures gradually trend cooler this week but not before two more unseasonably mild days. Today we make a run a 70 degrees, very close to records for the date. Even Tuesday, behind a front bringing showers into the region late today, temperatures rise well into the 60s. After a second cold front brings rain to the region Thursday, temperatures take a big step down and, finally, it feels like winter this weekend.

Today (Monday): You can leave the heavy jackets at home today as many of us start the day at or above 50 degrees. Then, depending on the amount of sunshine and the exact timing of showers moving into the region, highs reach the mid-60s to around 70 degrees. The chance of showers varies from about 20 percent early this afternoon to 60 percent by late afternoon. Winds are from the south around 10 mph. Confidence: Medium-High

Record highs today

National — 70 degrees (1931)
Dulles — 67 degrees (2001)
BWI — 71 degrees (1929)

Tonight: Showers are possible this evening (50-50 chance) but should end by midnight or so when skies partially clear. Despite the passage of a cold front, it’s a relatively mild overnight with lows from the upper 40s to low 50s. Winds from the south become out of the west around 10 mph late. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Tuesday): It’s amazing that on a mid-December day, in the wake of a supposed cold front, we’re still talking about highs well into the 60s. But the lack of any true arctic air, abundant sunshine, and a steady breeze from the west assures such a result. The breeze, gusting over 20 mph at times, does make it feel a bit cooler than the past several, however. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: Under mostly clear skies, it’s a chilly night. Lows range from the mid-30s in our colder suburbs to the low-mid 40s downtown. Confidence: High

Wednesday is mostly sunny and, for the 16th straight day, warmer than normal. Highs aim for 60 degrees. Increasing clouds Wednesday night, with lows in the 40s. Confidence: Medium-High

Rain is likely on Thursday as a fairly strong cold front sweeps through the region. But southerly winds out ahead of it draws up mild air so highs should still push 60 or so. Rain showers may linger some into Thursday night, but I’m thinking we dry out late, as lows drop back into the 40s. Confidence: Medium

The period Friday through the weekend is much cooler and more fitting for mid-December. On Friday, it’s windy with highs in the upper 40s. Saturday and Sunday aren’t as windy, but they are cold, with highs only near 40 despite periods of sunshine. Lows are in the 20s to near 30. Confidence: Medium
