FORECAST IN DETAIL
Yesterday’s burst of warmth into the 70s was a welcome one, but we won’t see temperatures quite as warm again until the weekend. Another cold front delivers morning showers and gradually cooler temperatures today. Clearing should happen by the afternoon, but it may be a bit slower to arrive than yesterday. Freezing temperatures are possible tonight in the outlying north and west suburbs. Sun soars tomorrow through the end of the week, and temperatures run just slightly cooler than normal.
The weekend starts with some cooler onshore flow on Saturday (maybe some clouds?) before a surge of 70s hits on Sunday to set the stage for a much warmer pattern next week. Hang in there!
Today (Tuesday): Scattered showers with a few heavier downpours are possible this morning, bringing our early starting temperatures in the 60s back down into the 50s. Rainfall should be from a tenth to a quarter inch with locally heavier totals. Clouds are slow to depart and hence temperatures slower to warm back up versus yesterday. We’ll aim for partly sunny skies by mid- to late afternoon with afternoon highs in the low to mid-60s. Breezy conditions from the south switch to come from the north in the afternoon (around 10 to 15 mph). Confidence: Medium-high
Tonight: Skies clear and winds are from the north at about 5-10 mph. Temperatures fall hard tonight behind the cold front, especially in the outer suburbs. Look for a range from the low 30s in the far outer northern to western suburban reaches to the low 40s in the city. Heaters will be running again, but it’s not nearly as cold as last weekend. Confidence: High
Tomorrow (Wednesday): Solid sunshine surrounds us to counteract the cooler air mass as much as possible. With light breezes from the north at 10 mph and relatively low dew points, it’s one of those days that feels cool in the shade and warm in the sun. Highs only manage the upper 50s to low 60s again — five to 10 degrees below normal. Confidence: Medium-high
Tomorrow night: Clear and cool again with calmer winds offering a big spread in temperatures. By dawn, lows should range from the lower 30s to the lower 40s (warmest right in the city). Confidence: Medium-high
A LOOK AHEAD
Thursday and Friday are very similar weather days with mostly sunny skies, temperatures still running slightly below normal as highs range in the low to mid-60s, with light breezes. Thursday and Friday nights still manage to be on the cool-to-cold side with lows ranging from the mid-30s to the mid-40s. A few more clouds may dot the skies on Friday night. Confidence: Medium
The weekend offers two different stories for Saturday and Sunday. Cooler, onshore flow may offer some partly cloudy skies on Saturday with cooler high temperatures in the low-60s range. A few clouds could linger Saturday night as lows range from the cool 40s to near 50 right in the city. We finally break into a warmer air mass on Sunday as highs rocket toward 70 degrees with mostly sunny skies. It’ll be a stark contrast from last weekend if these trends continue for at least Sunday! Confidence: Medium
