We've got warm, unstable air over the area today. Very humid, so we will have some storms likely developing this afternoon as a cold front moves in. (Jason Samenow/The Washington Post)

FORECAST IN DETAIL

Even with July lurking around corner, we still don’t see any sustained heat waves on our horizon. Instead, we benefit from variable conditions that include short-lived, relatively modest heat and then lower humidity. We’ll get some showers or storms with a cold front today and then another round on Thursday before we set up for a potentially very nice weekend. How are we getting so lucky?

Today (Tuesday): A cool front sinks south across the area, offering scattered showers this morning followed by a break — maybe some sunshine? — and then a few thunderstorms this afternoon. Some of these storms could be strong or even severe, and they could produce locally heavy rain. High temperatures climb into the middle to upper 80s along with high humidity. Winds blow from the west at about 5 to 10 mph. Confidence: Medium

Tonight: Mostly cloudy with scattered showers becoming partly cloudy overnight as temperatures cool behind the cold front. Lows range from the low 60s in the outer suburbs to the around 70 in the city, with falling humidity. Light winds are from the northwest direction at 5 to 10 mph. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow (Wednesday): A mostly sunny and more comfortable morning. A stalled front lurks to our south and may trigger some afternoon cloud cover around the area. Highs range through the middle 80s with westerly breezes from 5 to 10 mph. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow night: Mostly cloudy with showers possible toward dawn. Lows in the middle 60s to low 70s with slightly higher humidity, too. Confidence: Medium

A LOOK AHEAD

Expect mostly cloudy skies Thursday with scattered showers and thunderstorms, some of which could be strong. Highs range from the lower to middle 80s. Clearing Thursday night with lows cooling off into the 60s. Confidence: Medium

Friday marks the beginning of a nicer weekend. Mostly sunny skies should greet us as temperatures peak in the low to middle 80s with low humidity. Friday night should be mostly clear, comfortable and cool with lows ranging from the upper 50s to middle 60s — not bad for late June! Confidence: Medium

The weekend is looking stellar at this point, but we’ll have to watch it to see if confidence holds in the coming days. Mostly sunny skies are expected both days with low humidity on Saturday and highs in the low to middle 80s again. Sunday could see slightly more humidity, but still be fairly comfortable with highs in the middle to upper 80s. Saturday night should see a few clouds with lows ranging through the 60s. Confidence: Medium
