FORECAST IN DETAIL
My one and only hope is that this wave of heat and humidity is the summer’s last. As sweltering as it is today, it is only likely to get worse this weekend. A smattering of highs about 100 degrees Saturday look painfully possible. It is certain that high humidity will make it feel several degrees hotter than that. While an isolated thunderstorm is always possible late in the day, storm activity is likely to be the exception at least until Sunday when the weakest of cool fronts arrives.
Today (Thursday): Humidity will smack you in the face when you walk out today. With only scattered clouds, heat cranks up quickly as well. Highs are mainly in the mid-90s and it feels like the lower 100s factoring in humidity. Light south winds offer minimal relief. There is the slimmest of chances for isolated afternoon t’storms mainly north of the city. Confidence: High
Tonight: An early evening t’storm is still possible but for most non-existent. Skies should clear up enough for decent viewing of the peak of the Perseid meteor shower overnight if you can stand the humidity. Southerly winds are light. Lows only fall to the mid-to-upper 70s. Confidence: High
Tomorrow (Friday): The morning is uncomfortably hot and humid, and the afternoon only gets worse. Highs peak in the mid-to-upper 90s with heat indices in the 100s. Chances for thundershowers are minor. Even clouds are only scattered, providing little relief from the scorching sun. Breezes remain quite light from the southwest. Confidence: High
Tomorrow night: Evening forays are still a sweaty affair with readings mainly in the mid-to-upper 80s and minimal breezes. Overnight lows reach the mid-to-upper 70s. Confidence: High
A LOOK AHEAD
Saturday looks to bring the most brutal combination of heat and humidity although, by this time, do a couple more degrees matter? Highs peak in the mid-to-upper 90s for most but hot spots have a chance of cracking 100. Clouds bubble up with such heat and high humidity and this makes isolated t’storms more likely later in the day and into the evening. Overnight lows range from mid-70s in the suburbs to around 80 downtown. Confidence: Medium-High
There is little change to start Sunday with more painfully humid conditions. However, an approaching cool front leads to clouds becoming more numerous by midday and t’storm chance improve through the afternoon. This should help to pare highs back just a bit with most peaking in the low-to-mid 90s. As the atmosphere is so moist, any storms that develop could unload heavy rain. Overnight lows slip to the mid-to-upper 70s. Confidence: Medium
Monday is a little less humid (moderate) and highs only peak in the upper 80s to lower 90s, hopefully. Afternoon t’storms are possible but scattered in nature. Confidence: Medium
