A somewhat subjective rating of the day's weather, on a scale of 0 to 10.

5/10: I had hoped to make a call for an early fall. Mother Nature thought not.

Today: Partly cloudy, moderately humid. Isolated storm? Highs: 87-91
Tonight: Gradual clearing, light breezes. Lows: 67-75
Tomorrow: Partly sunny, humid. Highs: 93-97

The upcoming spate of heat would not be so bad if not for the beautiful start to the week that spoiled us. Today is just a warm-up (pun intended) for the near-record heat threatening to inflict pain Friday. The weekend is not quite as hot but still well above normal. Higher humidity makes it feel more tropical — fitting as we monitor the Atlantic for developing storminess.

Today (Thursday): Scattered clouds are likely through the day with a few possibly building into isolated thunderstorms late in the afternoon. Most areas, though, stay dry but with increased humidity (still moderate) levels. Highs top out in the upper 80s to lower 90s. Winds from the south around 10 mph provide some relief. Confidence: High

Tonight: The clouds dissipate after sunset, and breezes die down. Temperatures slowly drop only through the 80s in the evening. Lows do reach the upper 60s suburbs but only the mid-70s downtown. Confidence: High

Tomorrow (Friday): Sunshine is in abundance much of the day. Shower chances are practically nil despite moderately high humidity. Breezes are too light to be a comfort. Highs top out in the low-to-mid-90s, coming very close to record levels for the date (97 from 1948 at Reagan National; 95 from 1998 at Dulles). Confidence: High

Tomorrow night: Evening readings in the 80s are not very welcoming despite the mostly starry skies. Lows fall to the upper 60s outside of the city but mid-70s rule downtown. Confidence: High

Saturday should be just enough less hot and humid to be noticeable but still not enough to be comfortable with most highs in the upper 80s to lower 90s under sunny skies. Overnight lows fall to the upper 60s to lower 70s. Confidence: High

A few more clouds in the sky are about the only change on Sunday from the previous day. Highs again top out in the upper 80s to lower 90s, and overnight lows drop to the upper 60s to lower 70s. Confidence: Medium-High

Monday is nearly a twin of Sunday with highs in the upper 80s to lower 9os under partly sunny skies. The only difference is that some of those clouds could puff up enough in the afternoon to produce a few widely scattered thunderstorms. Confidence: Medium
