FORECAST IN DETAIL

We welcome back the 90s today, though not necessarily with open arms. Fortunately, the near-record heat is quickly swept away by a cold front this evening, which will  lead to a spectacular Thursday and Friday. Saturday will get the weekend off to a decent start despite trending warmer, while the Sunday forecast is more uncertain and potentially unsettled.

Today (Wednesday): A warmer start this morning, with temperatures quickly rising through the 70s, translates to a toasty afternoon. Highs top out in the low-to-mid-90s, perhaps challenging the record for the day at Reagan National of 94. The humidity is noticeable, with dew points in the low-to-mid-60s, but not as bad as earlier in the season. Winds are light, around 5-10 mph from the west-northwest. Confidence: High

Tonight: A moisture-starved cold front moving through probably can’t muster more than an isolated shower, if that. More significantly, the front ushers in a reinforcing shot of drier air as lows settle in the 60s under partly cloudy skies. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Thursday): High pressure brings a delightful combination of cooler temperatures and low humidity (dew points in the 50s). With a mix of sun and clouds, afternoon highs reach the upper 70s to low 80s. The breeze is a light one from the northeast at 5-10 mph. Confidence: High

Tomorrow night: You may want a sweater or light jacket, as evening temperatures will cool through the 70s into the upper 60s. Overnight lows dip to the upper 50s to mid-60s with partly cloudy skies. Confidence: High

A LOOK AHEAD

Friday is a carbon copy of Thursday. In other words, the fabulous weather continues, with partly sunny skies and low humidity, as highs reach the upper 70s to the low 80s. No weather worries Friday night, with comfortable lows again in the upper 50s to the mid-60s. Confidence: High

A more southerly flow on Saturday boosts highs to the mid-80s, along with a modest uptick in humidity. Saturday night follows suit, with somewhat muggier lows ranging through the 60s. Sunday highs climb back into the 80s with moderate humidity and a chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms. Too early to pinpoint timing and coverage. Confidence: Low-Medium
