In the grips of a punishing Arctic air mass, an ordinary lighthouse on Lake Michigan’s eastern shore was transformed into a majestic ice palace late last week.

As bitter winds ripped over the lake, they generated waves that flung sea spray against the lighthouse, located in St. Joseph, Mich., roughly opposite Chicago. The water froze on contact, caking the ice house in layer after layer of ice.

The video above shows footage of the fairy-tale-like structure from the beautiful aerial vantage point of a drone.


The British press have fallen in love with the sculptured-lighthouse. The Sun called it “a dead ringer for Elsa’s ice palace in Frozen.”
