FORECAST IN DETAIL

We failed to break out of the 50s yesterday after three days near 70. And that, my friends, is what qualifies as a cold snap in this wacky warm February. Because today we’re back into the 60s, and then near or past 70 tomorrow through Saturday, before a much cooler and breezy Sunday.

Today (Wednesday): Look out for a possible morning shower. And then it’s back to the mild stuff. In fact, if it weren’t for mostly to partly cloudy skies, we’d probably see highs near or past 70. As it is, we’ll tolerate the mid-60s, still 15-20 degrees above normal, with some increasing afternoon sun and a wind from the south of about 5-10 mph. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: Skies remain partly to mostly cloudy, and with a continued light wind from the south, we stay well on the warm side. We’re talking near or warmer than our normal daytime highs, in the upper 40s to mid-50s. Confidence: High

Tomorrow (Thursday): The record highs for tomorrow of 78 at both Reagan National and Baltimore-Washington International Marshall airports may be out of reach. But the warmth is still remarkable, with highs reaching the upper 60s to mid-70s under partly cloudy skies. That means we might challenge the record high of 73 at Dulles. Otherwise could see a stray shower. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: Partly cloudy skies linger, as does a slight chance of a shower. But the main story is the mild temperatures, which will fall only into the 50s for overnight lows. Confidence: Medium-High

A LOOK AHEAD

More of the same Friday, with partly cloudy skies and highs heading for the low to mid-70s. Friday night lows retreat to the 50s again. Confidence: Medium-High

The warmth continues Saturday as highs aim for the mid-60s to low 70s. Decent chance we’ll see some showers and possibly thunder as a cold front comes through. Right now the shower timing looks like sometime between late morning and late afternoon, but that’s subject to change. Shower chances diminish Saturday evening before overnight lows tumble into the 30s to low 40s. Confidence: Medium

For the first time in a while, Sunday will feel more like a February day. Highs top out near 50, with partly to mostly sunny skies and a gusty breeze. Confidence: Medium
