FORECAST IN DETAIL
As if our February weather wasn’t wacky enough, March roars in today with temperatures soaring into the 70s to perhaps near 80 and a good chance of thunderstorms, some potentially strong to severe. We do cool off tomorrow through Saturday, with a snow shower possible Friday.
Today (Wednesday): We could see a passing morning shower, mainly north of town. And then it’s off to the races as we rise through the 60s into the 70s, topping out in the 70s to near 80 for afternoon highs, despite partly to mostly cloudy skies. A mild breeze blows in from the southwest at around 10-20 mph, with gusts near 30 mph. After 1 p.m. or so and into the evening is when we’re likely to see some showers and thunderstorms, with damaging winds and large hail possible, along with the chance of an isolated tornado. Confidence: Medium
Record highs for today: 80 at DCA (1976), 77 at Dulles (1972), 80 at BWI (1972)
Tonight: Those potentially strong to severe showers and thunderstorms remain a risk through around midnight. Then we should see partial clearing as winds gusting over 30 mph from the west usher in cooler air, with overnight lows dropping into the 40s. Confidence: Medium
Tomorrow (Thursday): We’re back to that seemingly rare case of the weather feeling as it should. With winds blowing from the northwest at 15-25 mph and gusting to 30-40 mph, temperatures struggle toward highs in the upper 40s to mid-50s under partly to mostly sunny skies. Confidence: Medium-High
Tomorrow night: The winds calm down as we get into the evening and through the overnight. Otherwise we’re partly cloudy with lows settling in the 30s, and a snow or rain shower possible toward dawn. Confidence: Medium-High
A LOOK AHEAD
A weak disturbance moving through on Friday means the chance of a few snow or rain showers. No accumulation is expected as temperatures rise into the 40s for highs. Winds turn gusty again Friday afternoon into the evening, with Friday night lows in the chilly 20s. Confidence: Medium
The weekend looks quiet precipitation-wise, with just a slight chance of a Sunday shower. Saturday stays on the cool side with highs in the 40s, but Sunday highs should warm into the 50s to near 60. Both days feature at least partly sunny skies with light winds. Confidence: Medium
