FORECAST IN DETAIL

The recent unusually warm and humid weather doesn’t mean summer is here to stay. Temperatures trend downward this week and, by late this week, it feels more like March. The two cold fronts that bring temperatures down present opportunities for showers and storms today and again Thursday into Friday.

Today (Monday): A cold front approaches the region late today but, before it arrives, warm and humid air continues funneling through the region. There’s an outside chance of late afternoon showers and storms, but more likely they hold off until evening. Highs reach the 80s, with sticky dew points in the mid-60s. Winds are from the south around 15 mph, with gusts over 20 mph at times. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: Between about 6 p.m. and midnight, there’s a 40 to 60 percent chance of showers and storms, with the highest percentages in the northern part of our region. Otherwise, skies are mostly cloudy and temperatures gradually fall back to near 60. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Tuesday): This is a good-looking day. Less humid air filters in, but the air is comfortably warm and skies are mostly sunny. The only nuisance may be the occasional wind gust over 25 mph, but most of the time the breezes from the west are pleasant. Highs are around 80. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: It’s time to turn off the air conditioning. Humidity is low and temperatures fall steadily overnight. Under clear skies, lows range 50-55. Confidence: Medium-High

A LOOK AHEAD

Wednesday wins the prize for the week’s nicest day. We’re in between weather systems, and sunny skies push temperatures to highs of 70 to 75. Increasing clouds at night with a slight chance of showers toward morning. Lows are in the 50s. Confidence: Medium-High

Thursday and Friday are very unsettled. Showers and storms are likely, some of which may be heavy, especially Thursday evening through Friday morning. We may see some partial clearing by Friday afternoon. Highs both days are in the 60s with lows in the 50s to around 60. Confidence: Medium

The weekend is variably cloudy and cool, especially compared with this past weekend. Highs both days are in the 60s. We may have a period of showers Saturday into Saturday night, but they shouldn’t be too disruptive. Overnight lows are near 50. Confidence: Medium
