FORECAST IN DETAIL

As a cold front collides with the steamy air mass over Washington, heavy thunderstorms are likely this afternoon and evening. While the storms may be disruptive for the commute home, we can use the rain since so little has fallen this month. We dry out and humidity drops Tuesday through Thursday before sticky and maybe stormy weather returns late this week.

Today (Monday): It’s mostly cloudy and muggy through early afternoon or so, as temperatures make steady progress into the 80s. Between 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., thunderstorms are likely — some of which may produce torrential rain and damaging wind gusts. Rainfall across the region should average 0.5-1.0 inches, but amounts are likely to vary with locally higher and lower amounts to be expected. Flash flooding cannot be ruled out in the hardest hit locations. Winds are from the south at 10 to 15 mph with higher gusts. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: Showers and storms continue through sunset, perhaps a bit a longer in our eastern areas. Overnight, skies are mostly cloudy with lows 65-70. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Tuesday): We may start the day with a good deal of cloud cover but sunshine increases into the afternoon. It turns gradually less humid, with highs in the mid-to-upper 80s. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: It’s a pleasant evening and overnight with more moderate humidity levels and lows falling into the 60s throughout the region. Confidence: Medium-High

A LOOK AHEAD

Wednesday and Thursday are both decent days to officially kickoff summer. Skies are partly to mostly sunny with highs in the mid-80s Wednesday to near 90 Thursday. Humidity does start to creep up Thursday after a modest two-day reprieve. Overnight lows are in the 60s to near 70. Confidence: Medium-High

Friday through Sunday is variably cloudy, humid, and may be a bit unsettled. The wild card in this forecast is what happens to the disturbed weather in the Gulf of Mexico and its moisture. There’s a small chance some of that tropical moisture could be drawn into the Mid-Atlantic by the weekend. Whether it is or not, the three-day stretch should have — at the least — isolated to scattered late day storms, with high temperatures well into the 80s and overnight lows 65-70. Confidence: Low-Medium
