FORECAST IN DETAIL
Our unusually warm situation is fueling an unusually strong cold front this morning, with scattered showers and even some thunderstorms possible. We clear it out this afternoon, but winds pick up as temperatures cool. While we’re colder tomorrow and Thursday, the pattern still runs warmer than normal for January. In fact, we may hit 60 again this weekend with another chance of showers Saturday night into Sunday.

Today (Tuesday): Scattered showers and thunderstorms this morning continue to just about midday. Some of these storms could contain heavy downpours and gusty winds that impair commuting visibility. The rains deliver some needed moisture though, perhaps a quarter to half-inch with locally heavier totals. Highs reach the mid- to upper-60s during the midday hours before temperatures slide into the 50s later in the afternoon as skies turn partly sunny. Winds are breezy from the south at 10-15 mph this morning, then from the west this afternoon at 15-20 mph with higher gusts. Confidence: Medium
Tonight: Breezy conditions linger with skies turning mostly clear this evening, before clouds try to increase again overnight, as lows drop into the 30s. With winds from the west still around 10-15 mph, it feels more like the upper 20s to low 30s as we head toward dawn, even though most spots should stay above freezing. Confidence: Medium-High
Tomorrow (Wednesday): Partly sunny and much cooler, though still above normal, with highs in the mid-40s to near 50. Winds blow at 10-15 mph from the northwest, with higher gusts near 20-30 mph at times. Confidence: Medium-High
Tomorrow night: Partly cloudy and colder with lows ranging from the middle 20s in the outer suburbs to the low 30s in the city. Winds calm down as they come from the northwest at about 5 mph. Confidence: Medium-High
A LOOK AHEAD
Thursday should be our coolest day of the week with temperatures peaking in the low- to mid-40s under mostly sunny skies, and with very dry air as dew points dip into the teens. Clear skies and calmer winds Thursday night deliver a broader range of lows, from the colder low 20s in the outer suburbs to near 30 downtown. Confidence: Medium-High
Friday runs mostly sunny and warmer with highs back into the upper 40s to low 50s again. Friday night looks partly cloudy with lows ranging through the 30s. Confidence: Medium
The upside of the weekend is another round of warmer weather with temperatures in the 50s (Saturday) and low 60s (Sunday) for highs. Saturday looks like the nicer weather day with partly cloudy skies. Shower chances arrive Saturday night, with lows in the upper 40s to around 50, and continue into Sunday. We need the rain, so it’ll be good to add to the January totals. Preliminary estimates favor about a quarter to half-inch of rain. Confidence: Low-Medium
