Alex Ovechkin shatters glass in KHL game

Alex Ovechkin recorded his fifth goal of the season in Dynamo Moscow’s 4-1 win over Atlant Moscow Region Saturday, but that turned out to be a relatively pedestrian highlight for the Capitals‘ captain.

What really had everyone talking was how Ovechkin shattered a pane of glass, with his head, following a hit on Atlant forward Alexei Mikhnov. Proving that while the Russian Machine never breaks, he sure can break glass. Check out the video below. (s/t Pavel Lysenkov)

As you can see on the video, Ovechkin left the game to remove shards of glass from his hand and equipment. He suffered a gash on his left hand, but he was able to return rather quickly.

After Dynamo Moscow’s victory, Ovechkin spoke with Russian reporters about the NHL lockout and reiterated that he would consider staying in Russia if his contract was cut significantly under a new deal. He made similar comments on Sept. 4 before the lockout began and on Sept. 18 shortly after signing in the KHL

Whether Ovechkin would truly walk out on the NHL and the nine years and $88 million that remain on his contract with the Capitals remains to be seen. Many believe that Ovechkin’s statements, along with speculation from other players that some may stay in Europe, may simply be an effort to sway negotiations rather than a genuine threat but it’s tough to gauge at this stage.

As for the overall status of the labor negotiations, Ovechkin doesn’t believe the lockout will end soon. He said that the NHL’s latest offer was “all the same, just in different words.” Our friends over at RMNB have a full translation of the interview Ovechkin gave to Sovietsky Sport, be sure to check it out.
