During training camp, Coach Adam Oates held a meeting with the four players he considers to be the backbone of the Capitals organization: Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, Mike Green and Brooks Laich.

On Saturday, Oates announced to the team that the quartet will serve as this year’s captains. Ovechkin remains the captain while Backstrom, Laich and Green are the alternates.

“They are the core of this team,” Oates said recently. “They’ve been together for a long time and a real good nucleus, obviously, and talented guys. It’s their job to be the pros of this team and let their habits rub off on the other guys. And it’s their team.”

This marks Green’s first season as an alternate captain while Backstrom and Laich have both worn the “A” before. Backstrom and Green will serve as alternates until Laich, who is out with a groin injury, returns to the roster and then the three will rotate. Laich did not make the trip with the team to Tampa, Oates said.
