Earlier on Sunday, Brooks Laich said he was nearing a return from the groin injury that has sidelined him this entire shortened season. It’s possible that the Capitals could also regain the services of Mike Green on their upcoming four-game road trip.

Coach Adam Oates said Green, who has missed the past nine games and 11 of the last 13 with a groin injury, will travel with the Capitals and he’s hopeful the No. 1 defenseman will be able to play.

“We need to get where we feel that he can go in and not play three games,” Oates said. “We need him to play.”

Oates said the team hasn’t decided whether Tomas Kundratek, who suffered an apparent right leg/knee injury March 14 at Carolina, will make the trip as well but he believed it was an positive sign that the 23-year-old skated briefly Sunday morning.

“Encouraged that he could skate,” Oates said. “He’s had that injury before so I’m sure that he was a little nervous. Skating today obviously helps a little bit so we’ll see how it goes.”

Meanwhile, there remains no timeline for John Erskine’s return. Erskine suffered an apparent injury to his left hand/wrist on March 9 at the Islanders and hasn’t taken part in a skate with the team in a week. Oates said Erskine “hasn’t healed enough to skate”.
