Team Canada will announce its preliminary roster for the World Junior Championships later Monday afternoon, but when those players are named, Tom Wilson won’t be among them.

The Capitals have decided they will not loan Wilson, a junior-eligible rookie, to Team Canada so he could participate in the tournament.

“He means too much to our team and it’s best for his development to stay with the Capitals,” according to a statement from General Manager George McPhee that was issued by a team spokesman.

Wilson, 19, has appeared in all of Washington’s 27 games this season playing exclusively on the fourth line. The Toronto native has recorded one goal and three assists and is averaging 7:10 of ice time per night.

No Capitals prospects were on Team Canada’s preliminary roster, which is the players that will be invited to their training camp to select the final squad, when it comes out later on Monday. The World Junior Championships will take place Dec. 26-Jan. 5 in Malmo, Sweden.
