DENVER – Washington Capitals forward Jason Chimera has been fined $5,000, the maximum allowable under the collective bargaining agreement, for butt-ending Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere during Wednesday night’s game, the NHL Department of Player Safety announced.

It’s not Chimera’s first experience with NHL supplemental discipline. In 2013, he was fined for boarding Justin Schultz. Here is the offending play from Wednesday, in which Chimera appeared to jab Gostisbehere in the ribs with the end of his stick:

That action by Chimera was likely in reaction to this one by Gostisbehere:

“As the game went on, I think the intensity ramped up,” Capitals Coach Barry Trotz said after the game. “There was some cheap stuff going on.”
