The gold medal-winning U.S. Olympic women’s hockey team will be honored during the second intermission of the Stadium Series game between the Washington Capitals and Toronto Maple Leafs at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md. The game is March 3.

The Americans beat the Canadians for a thrilling, 3-2 shootout victory Thursday, securing their first Olympic gold medal since 1998.

There are some interesting connections between the Capitals and the women’s team. Forward Haley Skarupa is from Rockville, Md., and is a Wootton High grad. Capitals forward T.J. Oshie has been friends with U.S. women’s team forward Gigi Marvin since they went to the same high school in Warroad, Minn., and he knows the Lamoureux twins from their University of North Dakota connections.

As the men’s and women’s Olympic hockey tournaments went on, several Capitals players and Coach Barry Trotz said they had watched more of the women’s action than the men’s.

“Men’s hockey? I’ve watched zero,” Trotz said last week. “The women’s hockey was fantastic. … The women go at it hard.”
