The situation sounded serious: Four men were on a 73-foot fishing vessel off the coast of Alaska that was taking on water, and one of them was older and couldn’t swim. The men were abandoning their ship for a life raft.

The Coast Guard released video Thursday of its rescue, which occurred Wednesday morning between the Cross Sound and Yakutat Bay, west of the city of Juneau. It depicts the surf eventually swallowing the ship, the Kupreanof, and the recovery of the four mariners who had been aboard.

The video was shot from an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter sent from Air Station Sitka. The air crew monitored the mariners as they made their way into the life raft, and then hoisted them into the helicopter.

The air crew can be heard in the video expressing concerns about blowing the life raft into the sinking ship, as it bobs in ocean. The helicopter is just a few dozen feet off the surface.

The ship disappeared under water as the mariners were brought on the MH-60.
