NOTHING FANS the flames of contest entry, apparently, quite like the sight of a woman’s engaged dialogue on Valentine’s Day, a rascally head of ringlets — or a little airborne nudity.

By email and online comment, scores of caption writers drew their bows and let fly their ideas — all trying to hit the bull’s-eye for our jury. The occasion was Comic Riffs’ third Valentine’s Day Reader Caption Contest with Nick Galifianakis, and the results were even more entertaining than we anticipated:

Some entrants went with the punning (sample: “Shoot me with your Bow and Eros.”). Some went with the “it’s complicated” nature of love (“Oh goodie! Someone I can fix!”). Some went for the quick short joke (“Ooh…Cupid and Bob Costas had a baby.”). And some, our judges surmised, were apparently going anatomical in an entirely different way (“You are soooo cute, but I would like to have children.”).

But after culling all the spirited entries, our judges — syndicated Carolyn Hax artist Nick Galifianakis (aka “the relationship cartoonist”) and Team Cul de Sac editor Chris Sparks — chose a winner and two runners-up.

“The creativity of all of the Washington Post readers who entered is just outstanding,” our judges wrote, “but only one should be pricked by Cupid’s arrow.”

And the envelope, please…

The second runner-up is Rob Huffman, who entered the caption: “Do you have a return policy?”

The first runner-up is Karen Watkins, who wrote: “Ooh, I don’t see wings — or a ring!”

And then there’s our winner , whose caption prompted Chris Sparks to write: “Back in the day of singlehood, I felt [this] quote creep many times in my soul.” And the official 2014 Caption Contest champ is…

Scott Tredwell, who penned an entry that was thoughtful and playful without being too on point:

“Could we start with an arrow with platonic potency?”

Wrote our judges: “This caption is very much poetic justice for one of the most beloved/hated holidays.”

Congratulations, Mr. Tredwell! You’ve won the signed art from Nick Galifianakis. And our hearty thanks to everyone who entered.

Till next year!
