The Washington PostDemocracy Dies in Darkness

SKETCHBOOK: Last Call at the Corcoran: The Art of the Final Hour [A VISUAL NARRATIVE]

ARTIST’S NOTE: Last week, on the final hour of its final day, I headed over to the Corcoran Gallery of Art to get a sense of the turnout, as well as the mood of its rooms. Would the tone feel funereal — would there be a general air of resignation? Would masses be huddled in front of a few great works, like Daumier’s people at the print stand? Or would there be a party and a put-on smile, as the Corcoran tried to go out with a bang? Instead — as Washington’s oldest private art gallery (and art college) said farewell to its independence under its controversial new plan — I was surprised by these scenes from a last call at the Corcoran, recounted here as an illustrated narrative.
