Netflix has released the first full trailer for “Marvel’s The Punisher” series starring Jon Bernthal.
Bernthal returns to the role he made his own (Dolph Lundgren, Thomas Jane and Ray Stevenson all starred in “Punisher” movies; none were able to merit a sequel) when he initially debuted as Frank Castle/The Punisher (one of Marvel Comics most violent characters) in Season 2 of “Daredevil.”
With the Punisher’s origins taken care of on that show (his family was murdered in a conspiracy plot, taking him down the dark path of becoming a heavily-armed vigilante), “Marvel’s The Punisher’s” first season tells the story of Frank Castle’s revenge, as he violently hunts down anyone who he thinks can lead him to the people responsible for the murders of his wife and children. The Punisher’s bullet-filled investigation brings him into contact with seemingly every national security government agency around, including those tied to his military past.
Hardcore Punisher fans will be glad to see the character’s trademark white skull spray painted over his black, bulletproof suit in the trailer, as well as the presence of computer-genius/Punisher tech-help Microchip (Ebon Moss-Bachrach). Fans will also notice co-stars with ties to Marvel’s other Netflix shows, as Deborah Ann Woll will be returning as Karen Page. “The Punisher” takes place in the same Marvel/Netflix universe that connected “Daredevil,” “Jessica Jones,” “Luke Cage,” and “Iron Fist” to form “The Defenders.”
The killer of Frank Castle’s family isn’t the only mystery. There’s also the matter of when the series will debut. Marvel and Netflix are still keeping that date a top secret. The only thing we do know is that The Punisher will be arriving with a vengeance this fall.
