Marvel Studios has released a new “Black Panther” trailer, the first extended look at the upcoming film (due in theaters Feb. 16) since a teaser trailer debuted earlier this summer during the National Basketball Association Finals.

The trailer gives a closer look at the fictional African paradise of Wakanda, home of the Black Panther and the secret, scientifically advanced kingdom he rules. Parts of the trailer appear to take place not long after the events of “Captain America: Civil War,” the movie where the Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut. In “Civil War,” then-Prince T’Challa of Wakanda grieves after a terrorist attack takes the life of his father, T’Chaka, who at the time was the chieftain of Wakanda.

The trailer shows T’Challa coming home and taking part in the ceremonies that would appoint him the new chieftain.

That’s when we get a glimpse of a challenger to the throne, Michael B. Jordan’s Erik Killmonger, a classic villain from Marvel’s Black Panther comic books. We knew Killmonger, along with
Ulysses Klaue (Andy Serkis), would be the villains in this movie. Not seen in June’s trailer but on full display in this one is that Killmonger has designed what looks to be his own vibranium panther suit, meaning he not only is looking to usurp T’Challa as chieftain but also as the Panther of Wakanda.

Key players in the Black Panther mythos, the Dora Milaje, T’Challa’s all-female bodyguards, are seen in action, as well as Lupita Nyong’o’s Nakia, who looks to be a love interest as well as the voice of reason for the new Wakandan chieftain.
