“We all loved working with Rian on ‘The Last Jedi,’ ” Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy said in a statement. “He’s a creative force, and watching him craft ‘The Last Jedi’ from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”
Under the deal, Johnson will write and direct the new trilogy’s first installment and longtime business partner Ram Bergman will produce. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed.
“We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on ‘The Last Jedi,’ ” Johnson and Bergman said in a statement. “ ‘Star Wars’ is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it.”
On the TV side, Iger announced in September that two of Disney’s biggest cinematic franchises, Star Wars and Marvel, would migrate to Disney’s entertainment streaming service, which is being positioned to compete with such services as Netflix.
