Game 4 sets local Nats ratings record

(Jonathan Newton/The Washington Post)

Game 4 of the NLDS between the Cardinals and Nationals was the most-watched Nats game locally since baseball returned to D.C., according to Nielsen overnights.

The broadcast — which began on TNT around 4 p.m., eventually switched to TBS and ended around 7 on a Thursday — earned a 9.1 rating in this market, equal to about 214,800 homes. That’s virtually identical to the local rating the Redskins received on Comcast SportsNet for RGIII’s preseason debut.

(Because of the weird TNT/TBS switch, the official TBS broadcast window — and thus the overnight rating — only covers the 5-7:15 time slot. This is apparently the way ratings are commonly reported in such circumstances.)

Locally, the Nats earned an 8.4 rating for Game 1, a 7.8 rating for Game 2 and a 2.8 rating for Game 3, which was on the MLB Network on the early afternoon of a work day.

Thursday night’s game was also the most-watched divisional series broadcast in the D.C. market since Game 5 of the 2005 ALDS between the Angels and Yankees on Fox, which earned a 9.4, according to Major League Baseball.

The Game 4 broadcast on Thursday night earned a 20.3 rating in St. Louis, and a 3.0 rating nationally, according to the Nielsen overnights.

And obviously, the record will stand for all of 24 hours. Friday’s Game 5 broadcast figures to be the most-watched D.C. sporting event not involving the Redskins in quite some time.
