Meant to note this earlier in the week, but better late than never, as they say. Frank Deford, the longtime ace Sports Illustrated writer and novelist, is speaking at the Shirley Povich Center for Sports Journalism Thursday evening.

The event is at 7 p.m. at the Eaton Theater in Knight Hall; it’s free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Deford will be discussing his sports journalism career, and his new book, Over Time. Copies of the book will be for sale, and DeFord will be doing a signing after his talk.

The full flyer is here.

In other sports book news, longtime local PR guy Fred Sternburg reports that Bill Gildea’s recent biography of Baltimore’s black boxing champion Joe Gans — The Longest Fight — was optioned for a motion picture. Yay.
