Some of the Wizards hit the court last night in special Nike sneakers, paying tribute to Martin Luther King. The shoes are part of the Black History Month collection and will be available to in stores and online starting January 26. From the Nike release:

A consistent design aesthetic weaves through each shoe, with a color palette including black and grey highlighted in orange. The color orange is particularly meaningful with its bold hue and tie to Nike’s DNA since its 1972 inception.

Nike Basketball shoes include special versions of the KD V, LEBRON X and KOBE 8 SYSTEM; all three featuring black, grey and orange with the signature Nike BHM print.

Kevin Durant served as creative inspiration for the basketball version of the collection (there are tennis and soccer inspired designs as well), and Nike explained why his local connection played a part in the design.

Durant’s icon represents the hopes and dreams of young athletes, with a basketball hoop merging with a cloud formation, a nod to the support he has given to his hometown recreation center in Seat Pleasant, Maryland, a place he attributes for helping him realize his own dreams.

Emeka Okafor, Kevin Seraphin, Trevor Booker, and Bradley Beal were among the Wizards players sporting the tribute kicks last night.
