Alex Ovechkin drops the gloves

Alex Ovechkin isn’t really a fighter. I mean, who would want to risk messing up a pretty face like that? But during last night’s game, the gloves came off after the Panthers’ Kris Versteeg took exception to Ovi sending him into the boards. Versteeg retaliated with a cross-check, and it was on.

Well, more like half on. There were no punches landed, just a bunch of sweater pulling and body shoving, a few bear hugs thrown in. Considering Ovi’s last actual fight came in 2010, the skirmish was pretty noteworthy.

Both received matching minors and Versteeg got an extra two minutes. Mike Ribeiro scored on the ensuing power play, so the joke’s on Versteeg.
