Bryce Harper has joined the exclusive club of D.C. athletes to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated in the last three years. His company includes Stephen Strasburg and Robert Griffin III — a small but mighty cadre.

It’s Harper’s first SI cover as a pro (he also appeared on it as a 16-year old, with a headline that called him “the most exciting prodigy since LeBron”) and he’s only the second Nats player ever to receive the honor solo. Inside Sports Illustrated has some excerpts from the cover story, but I can’t imagine the full version has any quotes better than this one, from Harper on the infamous sophomore slump.

“I’m not going to put it my head. Sophomore slump? I was a sophomore in college and raked. Why can’t you rake in the big leagues?”

So Bryce Harper.

The issue hits the newsstands on Wednesday.

UPDATE: Reader Alex points out that Ryan Zimmerman once shared the cover with five other MLB players. Thanks, Alex!
