Morning Pixels: Redskins and all-time worst free agent signings

Tuesday was the most boring opening of NFL free agency in the years that I’ve been following the Redskins. And, somewhat unexpectedly, most Skins fans seemed to both understand and appreciate the inaction.

Sure, the salary cap penalties meant Washington was operating with hands tied behind its metaphorical back. But Redskins fans also remember being the team grabbing all the free agent headlines, and then being the team ridiculed for all the free agent disappointments.

To that end, Reader Bob sends along this recent Fox Sports list of the 20 worst free agent signings of all time. Three of the top four are Redskins: No. 4 Adam Archuleta, No. 3 Deion Sanders, and No. 1 Albert Haynesworth, whose signing is in part responsible for Washington’s current financial trouble. Washington also had No. 17 on the list, Dana Stubblefield. Four of the top 17 is a bad look. And it’s virtually certain that nothing the team does this month will add to that list.

BECAUSE YOU DON’T READ THE PAPER

* A horrific home loss to the Hurricanes has the Caps well-positioned to be sellers.

* Wise says it isn’t all Alex Ovechkin’s fault.

* The Wizards were swept by yet another lottery-bound team, this time the Cavs.

QUOTE OF THE NIGHT

Alan May, on Ovechkin’s many media critics:

“It’s easy to go after the Russian guy who still doesn’t have a great grasp of the language, isn’t it? Fine, but he is still the best player on the team. When they’re playing well, he’s the guy that stands out. The NBC guys can’t say enough [stuff] about Ovi. It’s pre-packaged in their shows. And a lot of times it doesn’t even match up to reality with what’s really happening on the ice.”

WHAT TO WATCH TODAY

VIDEO OF THE NIGHT

The Caps game was frustrating, but some fans got satisfaction out of watching one hockey player punch another hockey player a lot. The momentum gained by that fight spurred the Caps on to continue not scoring a single goal.

NATS BELOVED BY WILD ANIMALS

Already in Spring Training, the Nats have “had fish falling from the sky, a freshwater eel caught by Ryan Mattheus, a swarm of bees, and several raccoons.” Here are security personnel disposing of a raccoon this week.
