Back in September, during the NHL’s labor strife, Alex Ovechkin chopped off his hair, tweeting “im ready to fight for NHLPA!!!! Hahaha!!.”

Then his hair grew back, as hair tends to do for many people, present company excluded. Then, this week, he chopped it off again, leading the NHL Live studio crew to request an explanation on Monday night.

“I did my haircut like this in the summer, and then I didn’t take a haircut, and then I’m always shaving right now,” Ovechkin said, approximately. (His phone connection wasn’t the world’s greatest, or something.) “My hair was too big. And my head is big, and my hair is big, so my helmet gets too small. So I have to make a haircut.”

Have never previously heard an athlete explain a haircut based on head size, but bravo. Ovechkin was also asked about his fabulous quote concerning being in the toilet earlier this year.

“You forgot to push the button,” he told the chuckling crew, who then asked him about the pressure of being an NHL star.

“The pressure is there,” Ovechkin said. “I love the pressure. But sometimes it’s good, sometimes it’s bad. I just have to go and play and don’t listen to nobody. I think it’s for everybody like this.”

Ovechkin said there was no magic solution for his recent hot streak; “just pucks goes in,” he said. “That’s most important, I think, for a forward. And system works for me, for team….Most important thing is we’re winning.”

He also had happy words about Coach Adam Oates, saying “Dale, I don’t know, I just talked to him like only once maybe in all time I work with him. I just tell him hi and that’s it. Again, all coaches different; Oatesy he like to be involved in everything — it’s sticks, it’s hockey equipment, it’s power play, PK, it’s everything. It was probably the same situation with Bruce when Bruce was with us….For me personally, I love it, I like it. I’m enjoying working right now with him.”

And the winger was also asked whether there’s a date for his pending marriage with Maria Kirilenko, who tweeted the below double-date photo on Monday night.

“Right now she’s here with me, she just arrived yesterday,” he said. “So I’m kind of right now chilling with her, going right now to new house, spend some time with her. I’m not gonna give you the answer…because I haven’t  decided yet. But I hope it’s gonna be soon. Because we take one step and right now we have to take another step, bigger one.”
